We are in Japanese beetle heaven where I live.
This year - for the first time - I have turkeys loose underneath the muscadine vines. On an average year the beetles will decimate the muscadine leaves but this year very little damage.
So.... I put some netting around my blackberry/horseradish patch and turned the
chickens loose in there - now with in a week the beetle damage is minimal. I won't be able to let the chickens stay there long as they will eat the horseradish leaves themselves eventually but they have done a good job fending off the beetles and who knows what else that was hanging out in there.
I have not ever had total success in combating japanese beetles and finally just got rid of all of my hybrid tea roses just because of that. But I am at about 6 years with no chemicals here and I have seen the population diminish. I have placed two praying mantis egg cases here (last year). I don't see the praying mantis but my husband says that he has. Also I keep frog and lizard habitats - we have TONS of lizards and this year an explosion of frogs so I think that helps as well.
