I found a large old aquarium for sale, cheap because it's dirty and owner isn't sure if it doesn't leak. I could fix any leaks with silicon, but we do have winters here... and it's too large for me to bring it inside when temperatures go down. I can empty it for winter, but it would still have to stay outside. Will the glass not break? Could I just keep some plants in soil in the aquarium till next spring?

We used to leave aquariums outside in the snow with no problems (empty as well as full of stuff). Unless you have a real freaky temp change and the glass is covered in ice and in direct sun on an unseasonably warm day, I think you're good.
