Around here they grow as an under-story, under larger canopy in part sun. They don't like standing in water but they like getting watered very often. They prefer lots of organic material in the soil and simple compost or composted manure is all they really need.
A lot of people, maybe 1/4 cant eat them without getting severe stomach pain???   I like them.
