Question for the permie hive mind: Is it possible to grow garlic scapes on softneck varieties? My research says "no," but...

I grew a bumper crop of 'Silver rose' garlic this year, and some of them threw up what looked like scapes just before harvest. Here's a pic:

1) Is that a scape?
2) Why did my softneck garlic grow scapes?

looks like a scape! generally, they’re harvested a bit earlier (before that bulb that will be flowers or mini-bulbils has gotten that big around) in order to maximize the amount of stalk that’s tender enough to be eaten.

as to why, i don’t know! i’ve only ever grown hardneck varieties, and have no experience with softnecks. sometimes weird shit happens!

I agree. Here's the link: http://stoves2.com
