Ok,
Quite an unexpected surprise, long story, but we now have a new puppy at 10weeks old.
A Cream Retriever, from a very reputable and conscientious breeder (not a puppy farm (I can likely send contacts if anyone is interested send me a PM or email)), and before anyone gets onto in-breeding of the cream line, or potential issues of heart problems, hip dysplasia etc. not the case here (he's half russian), lineage and attributes have been traced/ tracked and he's probably seen the doctor more times than I have in the past 20 years :), but he is going to become quite a specimen. But YES, we are looking at forming him into a water loving, field running, bird sniffing and retrieving beast, with lots of love!

Hive mind question, intertwined with a little backstory:

Our "old" pup (12yo golden/yellow lab) we trained following the strategies from "Gun Dog" by Richard Wolters, mixed in with some hand signals I've learned from working with border collies, but I know there's been some developments and improvements on Wolters' methods.

Q: Has anyone other suggestions on books or resources to develop a top rate bird dog? Or are there methods that you have employed that are similar to or different from to develop good training and behavior in a non-intensive (meaning no-shock-collar) manner.

I am curious what you all come up with.
This is going to be a fun 2 years (to start) "big smiles" :)
Best regards.
Patrick.

Hi Patrick;
That is a fine looking pup you have there!
Very pale cream coloring, large paws, he will turn into a fine retriever!
Unfortunately my experience is with cattle dogs and Mastiff guard dogs, so I can't help you with training routines.
I do know that most of his "habits" will be instinctive and he should learn quickly what his "job" is.

Good luck and have FUN with your new working dog!

Update,
Zeus (English Cream Golden Retriever) is now 13 months old and doing well, and I hope this isn't blasphemy but he is getting named on his AKC docs as Hey Zeus (Jesus). sorry if you all lost me at that.
I've been working with him a lot, swimming, running, retrieving with bumpers, etc. list goes on. but I still have the feeling he's going to collect some bunnies and put them (cuddle them) in his bed. He has such a soft mouth.
OK, funny story, the other day after his breakfast, he ran into the kitchen, I called him, but he brought me an egg from the bucket, whole, uncracked. and then the other day he went into the laundry room and what did he find, the stuffed (fake) duck. brought it all proudly with big smiles. biggest problem is that he doesn't realize that he's 100 pounds. Oh, and that tail. He's still got a bit more work needed but I think he's coming along nicely.
I've read a lot of books on different methods on how to train gamebird dogs and the one that just really hits home is "gundog" by wolters. it's such a humane way of bringing a dog into the home and becoming a family member but also a working pet. Zeus is still young, long way to go, if any of you all have other suggestions, all ears.
Cheers
Patrick.
P.S. ...Zeus says hi. see pics below.
