After hearing about how great citric acid is as a cleaner (and delicious ingredient!) on the Paul Wheaton Permaculture Podcast, I went on a quick search for food grade organic citric acid in bulk.

However, looking around on Amazon and other websites, I'm noticing that citric acid may be one of those ingredients like salt and baking soda which can't be labeled organic in the same way potatoes can. Of course, chemically it is an "organic compound," I'm still wishing I could buy USDA certified organic or better.

In addition, many of the citric acid powders for sale seem to come from black mold , which may have been grown on corn or other non-citrus products.

Frontier Coop says their citric acid comes from a "non-GMO corn source."
Essential Organics says, "derived from the fermentation of non-gmo corn and cassava root"
Some definitions of citric acid say it comes from fermentation of Aspergillus niger, a fungus which can cause a plant disease called black mold. (I'm no expert on this stuff!)

Does anyone know a place I can buy citric acid powder in bulk which is derived from actual organic citrus sources? Or even just from organic sources?

Thank you!

Kay, I understand your concern.

Have you thought of making your own citric acid? That way you know the exact ingredients and how good they are.

https://www.wikihow.com/Make-Citric-Acid

There are several threads on the forum where lemon peels are fermented to use for cleaning.

If you still want to buy it:

Our citric acid is derived from 100% pure anhydrous citric acid from sugar cane or cassava. The crystallization occurs by a submerged fermentation process.

I hope you will find some of this information that might help your quest.
