I was watching some videos from takota Coen. He said he only breeds gilts and it looks like they are bred once a year (just judging from the videos)
Does anyone have insight into how his pig breeding system works?
What do you do about boars? They don't seem to be penned together (and for obvious reasons-breeding) however having one boar by himself for most of the year seems pretty mean as they like company. Pick a new breeder from the new litter and hope he breeds at 9 months old? Line breeding an issue then?

Would you be breeding the 9 month old pigs (born in March breeding December) or waiting until they are a year and 9 months old?

The reason we are want to go this route is piglets in minus 40 doesn't work for us. We don't like it the pigs dont like it so we want to move away from housing sows and boars together and work on quickly breeding for certain traits.

Would love some more information! Thank you

Hi Er,
I have never raised pigs (though I hope to get a few feeder pigs one of these years). The only question I can answer is about the boar being by himself. Having watched lots of youtube :), I see that people will either keep the boar with the sows (which can result in unplanned piglets, which you are trying to avoid), or they will keep a barrow or two for companions to the boar.

Good Luck!

Hallo Er,
In germany pigs have with 12 months first time piglets. And after that every 5 months once more.
In frosty -40 you will have one time per year little pigs.
The old sow (200kg/450pound) need 3 kg grain/day. This are 1100kg/2400 pound/year.
You can produce 1 kg pig with 3 kg grain or 365 kg / 800 pound slaughterpig from the same amount of feed, who the old sow need.
This feed is enough to grow every year a new sow for piglets and 2 pigs for slaughter.(plus slaughter the last year sow)
It is more meat and more profit as you feed the old sow year round. Without extra feed.
(feed requirements are guidelines, not a law)
