Last summer I bought a used metal building frame in hopes of turning it into a
greenhouse (or more appropriately I guess, a hoophouse). Issues with getting it delivered and the costs of a new roof for our house delayed the
project and I'm now hoping to have it functional by fall. I would appreciate any insight and suggestions on the placement of both the structure and the growing area inside. I've uploaded a rough sketch to help illustrate my idea.
I'm located on top of a hill and the predominant winds come from the west. My preferred area will get the full effect of these winds and I believe that running the structure north to south would be the best bet to avoid wind damage. My second choice wouldn't get the full effect of the wind but also wouldn't be as close to my main growing area, though it would be in close proximity to the
water faucet. Small
trees will need to be removed in both areas to allow maximum light.
The frame I'm using is perpendicular to the ground which will allow me to utilize every inch of space. Depending on final spacing of sections, I predict the structure will be 18' to 21' long. I'll be using chain link top rail to secure the sections at the top and plan to run a hip board along the sides to allow for ventilation. I'm also planning on going with channel and wiggle wire to secure the plastic as I feel that it's better to do it right the first time.
I guess my main concern is the placement of the benches and growing bed. I want the benches relatively high as I'm tall and want to alleviate as much back pain as possible, but will they shade the growing area too much? Probably not much of an issue in summer, but on those short winter days it could be. Benches will see plenty of use in early spring beginning with cool-season crops and gradually give way to more tender crops. After that the area will primarily be used to grow seeds and cuttings of perennials.
As for the growing bed, it will be a no-dig bed running the full length of the structure. I hope to add at least a month to my growing season but am hoping to keep some crops going year-round under row cover if at all possible. Is placing the bed along the western side of the structure the best choice?
Should I switch it to the other side? Or perhaps I should make the front section strictly benches on both sides and split the bed into two sections in the rear?
I don't forsee starting on the structure until late July, so any input will be greatly appreciated.
