Put down cover crop of oats and peas and something ate still of the oats. I suppose I need top mulch or cover with soil next time.

You need to put a thin scatter mulch over the seed 1 bale to 40 square meters.
 
I suggest huckleberry pie. But the only thing on the gluten free menu is this tiny ad:
