I have about four acres of dense, scrubby balsam fir forest on a hillslope in central Ontario. I would like to thin much of it out to create space for something, but I'm not sure what. Any suggestions? Blueberries??
Soils under conifers around the world are notoriously acid and infertile. Blueberries sound like an excellent choice, being likely native to your region and adapted. You might seek out nitrogen-fixers and other soil builders to improve portions of the site....the challenge will be finding some that are adapted to your region. Alders? Eleagnus? Bayberry?
