Probably isn't really new, but I haven't done it before.  This weekend I built fences for some of my new trees that are being decimated.  And yes, I often close the barn door after the animals escape...  Anyway, I bought a 50' roll of concrete remesh 5' tall.  I cut it into 4 pieces, each 12'6" long.  I cut them so on one end, you have full squares, and the other end has the 6" piece sticking out.  I put them in a circle and butted them together so that I could wrap the 6" piece of wire through the square at the other end to connect them.  It makes a circle about 4' across.  The squares are 6"x6", so I don't think the deer will stick their heads through to eat the trees, and at 5' tall, they should work well for new trees that aren't tall.

I bought a new roll for about $90.  I got 4 fences out of it that are sturdy enough to stand without posts.  They should be reusable for the foreseeable future, so I didn't think it was a bad deal.  If you're a good scrounger, you can often find pretty big pieces that are left over from concrete jobs for little to no money.  May be a viable option for some people.

Great idea, would they really be 'tree guards' ?
