I like the idea of living in a community of like-minded individuals, though I've had no success in finding a spot.

I've been considering the possibility of "renting" some land in and around someone's orchards to pasture poultry and herd sheep or goats; my animals keep the property clean, so you don't have to mow or worry about pests and the plants get fertilized. I like Joel Salatin's ideas about fiefdoms and want to run my business overlaid on top of ours. I have a van that I would park tucked away somewhere on the property, preferably with a quarter acre to tend my own garden and house the animals while they're not being herded around the rest of the property.

What I provide: fertility from the birds/sheep, more critters eating to manage the grass/alfalfa mix growing between the trees. Help occassionally on other projects that arise. A few birds for your table. NO drama, late night noise, etc. Occasional trades of animal care so we can leave the farm once in a while.

We establish "rules & mutual understanding" early so we can be good neighbors. I would use only organic feed. I'm a very straightforward person, what you see is what you get.

I also have 2 dogs, which would be with me or the van at all times.

A little about me: I'm 30, single, I grew up on a 350acre farm in Hawaii, I attended several universities, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering and aviation maintenance technology, I was a jet engine mechanic on the B2 Stealth Bomber for the Air Force; I'm currently an analyst for a mortgage company, I can fix just about anything, majority of my interests are outdoor related; I enjoy meditation, yoga, hiking, rock climbing, horses, history, constantly learning, etc.

If you'd like to discuss further and think I might be a good fit on your property please reach out. greerc91@gmail.com

Hi David,
I like your (and joel’s) idea. Not sure if my place would be a good fit but you can look up some of my other posts to learn more about what I’ve got going on. In a nutshell, my property is off-grid, in southern Oregon, 25 mins from Ashland. Not much infrastructure for animals at this point but certainly could be. It would be needed as we have all predators, other than wolf.
Peace,
Leaf

Hey Leaf,

I only found a few of your pictures, is it all sloped?

I might know a small ranch that might be interested in pasturing small animals behind the organic grass fed cows in NW Washington. I can ask. I would consider it myself but am out looking at properties to purchase. Still looking.

I've been looking at properties for a while, but I feel like I'll likely never find exactly what I want at the price I want, and just keep looking; so, I think fiefdoms and community is probably the best way to go. Since you could always move if it's not what you're looking for. I'd definitely be interested in NW Washington; love the views/weather.

I agree. Here's the link: http://stoves2.com
