I'm looking to buy an ear tag applicator, and I've gone partially down the ear tag rabbit hole. So many kinds, so many brands. Some are plastic, some are metal, and many appear to apply only one kind of tag which restricts a person to buying proprietary ear tags. I have a small farm and small but growing herd of cattle and I will only be tagging a handful of animals per year. I don't mind paying for quality tools, especially when they are made to last and work well, giving me little or no frustrations.

Are there folks here on Permies that tag their own livestock? Those who do, will you share your experiences and perhaps tell us what you like or don't like about your tag applicator? Some input and direction from others who have real field use would be much appreciated. Thanks!

There may be a commune or cooperative that has one.
Otherwise ask a neighbour if you can borrow one and buy the tags that suit that tool.
Here is a universal one

I think the best bet is to decide what type (brand) of ear tag you are going to use then buy their applicator.  If you haven't decided already it's good to ask neighbors and friends opinions or the feed store people what their best selling tags are and why.   I'm using Z tags and get along fine with them but I know some of the other brands are good also.
