The battle of survival for the Icelandic goat!!

The Icelandic goat is in danger of extinction. Even though the Icelandic goat has survived in Iceland since the settlement in the ninth century, the strain is in danger of imminent extinction. Now, there are only about 800 goats left in Iceland.

Goats and sheep caused massive soil erosion in the past. During early settlement up to 80% of top soil was lost. It makes sense to keep the numbers down.

I'd be interested to know how many of these goats live around the world. The figure is for Iceland only.

This breed is subsidized by the Icelandic government. I checked out the government papers on this and they clearly state that the goat is NOT in danger of imminent extinction. The population is 8 times higher than in 1960.
