We live in a not so eco friendly traditional house, it's older from the late 1900s and was updated in the 70s. It has partial board trim that was looking it's age 10 years ago. I'm interested in replacing it with something that can be locally sourced in our urban area and hopefully salvaged or saved from the dump. Anyone have any cool ideas or examples? Please don't say pallets. I just finished a project that used 50 of them and I really don't want to take any more apart. :)

you have to keep an eye out for buildings being built, renovated or torn down. or else find a source for some trees that can be cut up for lumber. always ask contractor or property owner first if you can recycle what they are throwing away as it saves much frustration from potential problems. be sure to have solid shoes, hard hat and gloves ready as well as a means to transport materials. you never know when you will come across what can be useful for you.
another source. some dumps allow recycling and in some places its illegal to remove anything from a dump so be sure to find out where you are at. and yes it is truly a shame that millions to billions of dollars of perfectly good materials end up in land fills.
there is also habitat for humanity, many areas have used building material thrift stores and folks at these places are usually very helpful
