I've wanted to grow hopniss (American Groundnut) since before I learned about permaculture, and discovering that it's a nitrogen fixer increased my interest. The problem I have with plants that put their food underground, though, is that it's harder to do close polycultures because you'll interfere with other roots when you dig things up. Especially with a vine like hopniss that doesn't take up much surface space.

So I'm wondering if there are edible root/tuber plants that combine well and can be dug up all at once. I was thinking of trying chicory (long, thin taproot) with the hopniss (clustered tubers closer to the surface) under the theory that the two roots shouldn't interfere with each other, too much. Have any of you had success with growing and harvesting multiple root plants together?

If you remember to in a month, I'd love a post knowing how it went. Sunchokes are on my near-future list, and I'm considering Camas.

What's a year in metric? Do you know this metric stuff tiny ad?
