Hi everyone!
I’m building with a conglomeration of earth bag, straw, stone and cob and had a few questions about the strength of cob if used as columns.

On the south wall I will have a greenhouse attached to my house (similar to an earth ship) with 7 windows that are 6’ tall by 2.5’ wide.  I’d prefer not to have to add wood frames for these windows and instead just install them directly in cob.  I’m unsure of how thick the columns of cob need to be between each of these windows.  For example, could I install each of these windows with say a 6” x 1’ column of cob in between each window?

I hope my question is clear.  I know cob has amazing compressive strength but I’ve just never heard of people using it in column type situations.

Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide!!

Sounds like a great project.
I have experience with that sort of thing.
If the columns are not load bearing it should work.
I would build a column with dried earth blocks and then do the window styling with loose cab on the column.
