Hi! I'm very new to vegetable/fruit gardening and permaculture. I live in the Pacific Northwest and just wondered if anyone has used fir or cedar as a mulch for berry crops such as blueberries or strawberries. I live in an urban area and I probably send about 20 bags of green waste to the city compost every year full of needles. I think composting it would take much too long. Is this a good idea? Any other suggestions on how to use this free material?
I have used wood chips that are generally (an educated guess) 50% pine, 25% fir, 15% cedar and 10% oak. They work great, especially for my strawberries. My blueberries died years ago....
Pine needles are excellent also, as noted.
