I love this practice of food forestry. I'm wondering whether anyone can give me pointers on what herbs and edibles like to grow under blue oak / grey pine cover. The area I have in mind is zone 9a on a moderately north facing slope.

Grey pine are sometimes referred to as the tree that gives no shade. I think that's what people say. Anyway the ground underneath them still gets a fair amount of sun.

Currently it's mostly native grasses and wild oats here and there under the trees.
