Hi there,

I am looking at designing a rocket stove/mass heater than can be adapted to combine the functionality of an outdoor heater and a BBQ in a garden. I just wondered whether any rocket stove/rocket mass heater experts on here would be willing to consult me on designs. I am happy to pay for the expertise.

Let me know if this is you!

Cheers,
Ollie

Hi Ollie;
Welcome to Permies!
It sounds like Matt Walker's BBQ plans are just what you are looking for.
I bought his plans and built his BBQ (I call it a Black & White oven.
At the same time, I built a brick outdoor year-round kitchen.
It would look beautiful in a garden setting.
Here is the link to my build       https://permies.com/t/164923/rocket-ovens/Build-Black-White-Rocket-Oven
And here is a link to Matt's website  https://walkerstoves.com/

Here's a thought for a homesteader-type different use for an RMH that is millennia in the making, an RMH egg incubator designed similarly to the ancient Egyptian egg-oven. Still in use today with modifications from 1897 by a Canadian, farmer Lyman Byce, who came up with the coal lamp incubator, using an electric regulator to keep temperature constant. I might add that it seems the Egyptians used experience, not thermometers which hadn't yet been invented, checking egg temperature by touching an egg to an eyelid. I just came across this so I can't provide any juicy design details but the ancient design, still in use today, would lend itself well to more recent RMH designs, perhaps with enough left over heat to be used for other purposes. The article that sparked the thought - https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/egypt-egg-ovens The Egyptian Egg Ovens Considered More Wondrous Than the Pyramids.

Hi Mary;
These are cool! I have never heard of them before.
I'm thinking that an RMH might cook those eggs rather than keep them warm!
However, using one that shares its heat with your chicken coop might make your hens happy girls.
Happy warm chickens produce lots of tasty farm eggs!

I can hardly eat those pale yellow things that come from a carton anymore, I'm kinda spoiled!
Nothing like a real farm egg, with a glass of cold Jersey cow milk on the side.
Add some freshly baked bread slathered with homemade butter and bacon/sausage from your home-raised piggies...
Living the good life for sure!

Hello Thomas, I was definitely worried about too much heat, also, which is why I mentioned sharing the heat. Your idea of sharing with the chickens is a good one!

You made my mouth water with your description of the good life, I'm getting there. I don't have chickens but will someday. I totally agree with no longer liking the things in a carton from the store. Mine come from a neighbor. I especially liked your bacon seeds.
