A friend of mine had their septic tank back up into the house. Ugh. His comment was that he will never buy a house on septic again - meaning he will only buy a house on a sewer system.

Sewer lines can back up too.

I was reminded that folks are still uninformed about composting toilets. And I was reminded that some folks want to find legal, permitted ways to install them.

What examples do you have? Here's a small start:

--In the Seattle area, King County approved composting toilets at 21 Acres which is a center for sustainable ag and sustainable living.

--In California, Chaffin Orchards (read more about them in the permies thread "How Grassfed Beef will Save the World") is part of a study to determine the safety of both composting toilets and alternative grey water systems.

"California is one of only three states in the entire nation that does not allow for composting toilets," Salisbury said, noting their use in other states and in federal parks. "We want to see if we can make a tiny little fingernail crack in that so we can save our ancient clean water."

(Note: this is not a discussion about politics - go to the politics and justice forum to post links to political discussions - this is meant purely as a potential reference list of approved examples.)
