Just wanted to give a heads up about a full scale mushroom cultivation course I'll be giving this April in Olympia, Washington. Below is the decription. Feel free to contact me with any questions at the contact email below.
Dates: April 20-21 (Saturday & Sunday)
Location: Olympia, WA
When: The course will start Saturday & Sunday morning at 10AM and go until the material is finished each day (roughly 6pm). The knowledge presented will be to a solid depth, though in a way that will allow for questions and practice with the skills. We will break for lunch around 1 or when people start getting antsy. There is a food co-op a few blocks from my house and a pizza place down the street and everyone is welcome to eat at my home.
What: While this course is intended for a small scale home grower, the techniques and concepts presented easily apply to larger operations and spawn producers. I believe that home cultivation will be very important for the world in coming years and feel that packaging the information in a tangible, practical, and accessible way is the means to help the transition of mushroom cultivating from the farms to homes. I plan to present a range of techniques that I believe will not only leave you fully prepared for your own home cultivation but to also empower you to learn more and innovate your own approach in time. As there are as many approaches to cultivation as there are cultivators, what I can promise is to offer my personal technique, based on years of reading and experimenting, that works for me. On Saturday we will learn about the logistics of cultivation and how to work with agar, liquid cultures, making grain spawn as well as making spore syringes and a culture library. On Sunday, we will finish production by making our own spawn on wood and compost based based substrates, and then move outdoors to cover outdoor applications of laying mushroom beds, innoculating logs, and creating mass spawn. We will also cover many alternative and "cutting edge" techniques of low-tech and semi- or non-sterile pasteurization and cultivation that in recent years have been proven to work. Throughout, I will intersperse concepts that have taken me years to understand along with tools and work-arounds that are both of my design and found through much time sifting through the internet. Some of what I will present is currently unpublished and all of it will be made available in a workbook provided to all participants with references and resources.
We will mostly be working with Oyster, Turkey Tail, Reishi, and King Stropharia mushrooms for demonstration purposes though the techniques described will apply to most cultivated species as well as many non-commercially available species as well.
How much: As stated, I am asking $200 for the course. At the end of the course, participants will get a choice of 4 cultures (valued at $100) from a selection of Shiitake, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Blue Oyster, Pheonix Oyster, Elm Oyster, & Shaggy Mane. If you would like more than 4 I will be selling extras for $15.
If you would like to register for the class please respond to this email so I can reserve a space for you.
