Flint corn

This year I grew some flint corn. The variety was Cascade Ruby Gold. I did about a 4 ft x 10ft bed of it, and the net yield was about 8.4 lb of dry corn. This is plenty productive! It equates to about 160 bu/acre. But yield wasn’t the goalpost. It was fundamentally exciting to know that I can grow flint corn in Canada. Made scrumptious polenta. Next up is johnnycakes.

Made some cornbread today per Carol Deppe’s recipe. It is absolutely fantastic. Shown here smeared with garlic confit.

One reason to grow flint corn is simply how beautiful it is!

Yeah I think so. It ended up getting quite a bit taller than this pic. The biggest plants were about 11 feet tall, and one had two big red ears.
