I have a very good book on basket making and hopefully I will make a really neat and sturdy basket one day. The materials suggested in the book are mostly reeds with pre-made hoops and handles.

I tried scorching a bamboo stick for shaping, it worked somehow but not perfectly symmetrical. If you DIY the handles or hoops from wood, what kind of wood do you use? And any DIY tools to shape them?

Thank you.
