In the heart of winter, the Permaculture Bootcamp, alongside the vibrant Wheaton Labs community, engages in a unique celebration of permaculture-related half-assed holidays. Among these is the much-anticipated Apple Seed Day, a day dedicated to planting fruit trees from seeds using permaculture techniques, as well as enjoying the fruits of our labor, quite literally! Join Stephen, Cat, and Owen as they embark on a mission to plant a diverse array of seeds and culminate the day with delicious apple pastries.

Benefits of Planting Fruit Trees from Seed:

• Retains the Taproot: Unlike grafted trees, those grown from seeds retain their taproot, which helps in anchoring the tree deeply in the soil, improving drought resistance and stability.
• Genetic Diversity: Seed planting contributes to genetic diversity, which is crucial for the adaptability and resilience of fruit species to changing environments and diseases.
• Custom Adaptation: Trees grown from seeds can adapt specifically to the local environment over time, potentially developing unique traits suited to local conditions.
• Cost-Effective: Growing fruit trees from seeds is a cost-effective method, especially for large-scale planting, as seeds are often more affordable than grafted saplings.
• Educational Experience: The process of growing trees from seeds offers a rich educational experience, allowing individuals to understand and appreciate the full lifecycle of a tree.
• Longevity and Health: Seed-grown trees can be healthier and live longer than their grafted counterparts, as they grow in a more natural and unaltered form.
• Unique Varieties: Planting from seeds may result in new and unique fruit varieties, offering a sense of surprise and experimentation in fruit cultivation.

Apple Seed Day at Wheaton Labs is a testament to the importance of permaculture practices, community engagement, and the joys of homesteading. Through planting seeds, we not only cultivate fruit trees but also nurture biodiversity, resilience, and a deeper connection with nature. We invite you to be inspired by our journey and consider joining the Permaculture Bootcamp at Wheaton Labs, where you can immerse yourself in hands-on permaculture living.

You inspired me to plant my tasty sour granny apple seeds, and to research which seeds need to be planted when, its only my second year of taking growing things seriously, so I'm still learning a lot.  I want to plant all my seeds at the right times to maximize how they'll do, and I recently figured out that not all seeds should be planted right before spring or in early spring haha, so this video was a good companion lesson to that idea.
