I have another goofy idea.

Build a fence running east to west.
Berm both sides with soil.
Leave some fence exposed on top.
Use burlap as geotextile, attached to the fence to increase the critical angle of repose for your berms.
Plant the berms.
Throw clear plastic over the whole thing and make it taunt by whatever means.

The north facing berm could be modified with  layers of plastic and cardboard for insulation.
The fence could be made of anything and lined with anything.
Black plastic, netting ,or  row cover could be used in addition to or as a replacement for he clear plastic.
A a solar powered fan could blow warm daytime air into corrugated tubing inside of the berm(s).
The water shed by the plastic should be directed back to the berms for use by the plants.
The burlap should assist in wicking .
The whole thing could be a compost pile, or hugle or even some grow buckets in a kiddie pool.

The main idea is a single vertical plane offering support for bermed materials and protective coverings.

What an interesting idea! I hope people with acreage and who are handy will give that a try soon. Everything I read lately has me convinced that insulation (especially by the earth already present!) is the way to solve lots of problems, so it sounds like you've got really good thinking going on here. Does this idea work with glass at all?

So it takes a day for light to pass through this glass? So this was yesterday's tiny ad?
