Last year I was playing around with wicking beds/containers.  The only one that kinda worked was one made with a plastic bin.  I grew a sun gold tomato, garlic chives, and marigolds. Stacking functions I got a plastic pitcher. Drilled a bunch of holes in it. Planted it so only the top stuck out.  I filled it with damp shredded cardboard, food scraps and 50 ish red wigglers.  I would put food scraps in it occasionally, but never saw any worms, so I thought they all died. I stopped feeding them and ignored the bin all winter.
The other day I went to get some chives. Not only did I see a worm, but the lid to the pitcher had blown off, and in it was a bunch of tomato seedlings.  The rest of the bin is empty except for the chives.  The pitcher must have been a little more protection maybe warm up a bit more creating a little sprouting greenhouse.  It just made me think about how even simple everyday things can help us grow our veggies.
I'm not sure what I will do with my little volunteers. Sun Gold tomatoes are hybrid so who knows what I will get.  I will have to plant at least one, just to see what I get.
