Sweet gum or gumball trees make a spiky seed ball that is slow to decay.
They burn fast and furious, at least when dry.
When pyrolized they can be sily crushed to powder in the hand.

Yes, we have a sweetgum tree on our street. I pick them up and throw them in the biochar. I think that they dry out quickly because they are each so small. They burn fast. I'm not sure if I'm making the neighborhood more tidy or adding to my biochar source. Yes!
It's an 80 foot tree, so there are a lot of gumballs. I think the neighbors appreciate me cleaning them up.
Yeah , they burn like crazy, but not for very long on their own.
I have settled on using them as tinder and as biochar feedstock.

You gave me a good idea. I can stuff sweet gum balls into the newspaper and cardboard at the top of my TLUD just when I'm
igniting it. It can be the spark that gets the fire going.
