Herbal remedies for insect/spider bites?

The other day my pup got bite by something on her paw,I noticed it that evening
Yesterday she had licked it to keep it clean, now it's bare of fur.

It's about the size of a dime? I tried looking up and think maybe it was a spider?
She hasn't shown any signs of discomfort, no limping or anything.

Today it's a little black around the edges, it could be dirt though, I'm about to clean it with some salt water.
Last night I tried a little yarrow water, but because it was wet, she licked it.

My next option is to take her to the vet tomorrow, which I wasn't trying to do.
My friend who worked at the local animal clinic told me it could be infected and she suggested to take her to the vet.

I'm Hoping there could be another way to take care of it, so I'm not dependent on the vet for everything.


Anyone have any suggestions that I can try to help her?

The picture makes it seem a little worse/raw. Because of the lighting and the use of the camera on my ipod.

tobacco is remarkable for bringing relief to insect bites and stings. if you have a leaf of fresh tobacco, mash it up a bit so it is juicy, and apply to the area as a poultice. old timers would even break off half a cigarette, chew it up to get it moist, and then use that as a poultice. my kids stop crying instantly when tobacco poultice is applied to bee or wasp stings.

for your specific situation, I dont know, that looks a bit nasty, like a sore or an open wound. not really what I would think to apply a tobacco poultice to. sometime a quick visit to the vet is money well spent before things get worse. that's what I would do.

Three simple rules
1)vinegar for wasp stings - you find Vand W together in the Alphabet

2) Ammonia for Bee stings - A and B together in the Alphabet ! If you have the right insect the relief is immediate, if you guess'd wrong switch !

3) A spider's bite is nasty, it kills and liquifies the injured cells, and the damage is done by the time you find It ! As the cells die the toxins are
taken up through the neighboring cell walls those cells die, eventually the toxins weaken and then in a weird twist of fate the bodies immune
system looks at these contaminated sick cells and decides that the injured cells are 'not human' and NEED to be attacked and killed by the immune
system ! Though nasty it is self limiting!

Your dog is doing the best it can to self treat ! there are ( I believe !) antibiotics in dog saliva !

If this happened to me I would try to squeeze a little venom back out through the puncture sites, wash it ,use a tiny dab of antibiotic cream and
keep it clean and dry. Dry is just as important as clean ! Hope this helps !

I looked at the spot again today, and did squeeze a tiny amount of puss out, but it was hardly anything.

I'm going to try and dab it clean with some salt water and keep watch over her again today.
I was talking to family members and a neighbor, they gave me a little advice, so i'm going to watch it over today to see if it shows any signs of improvement.

A small current from a battery can break down spider venom (works with mosquito bites and bee stings too). I had a nasty spider bite that swelled my finger up and was intensely painful. It took about 30 min. of rubbing it with the nodes of a 9v battery to bring the swelling down and decrease the pain significantly. You don't need to use a big battery that would hurt the dog, but wetting it with a little salt water will help carry the current better.

Dr. Stan Abrams is a big proponent of this treatment but he uses a modified stun gun. http://www.ddsp.com/bite_treatment.htm

Britney A. : So- you're living in a house without any smoke detecters ? , Seriously almost every smoke detector that is not hard-wired into 110 vts has a 9
volt battery, and you changed it not to long ago - Spring ahead and fall back /change your batteries ! If you borrow them put them back !

While I Will remember to change my Batteries I will probably forget to try this after a few months have gone by !

I'm a little late; but for future reference... Papain breaks down the proteins/toxins in bug bites...

I know there are herbs for drawing out toxins, but I can't recall any just off-hand

There are also several, such as chickweed and plantain, that aid in reduction of inflammation

Apply a papain paste for 10~20 minutes, rinse off, then apply a mud/clay coating with benefitial herbs mixed in.

I didn't have to go to the vet. :]
The spot started to heal on it's own, I kept up with the salt water though.
It's now scabbing over and i'm still checking on it.

But i'm glad to know of all the different things I can do in the future if that were to happen again.
