Hi all - I’m starting a food forest by planting 18 food
trees and a 20x30’ vegetable garden. The whole space needs protection from our two major animal pressures,
deer and bear. The space is roughly 100x100’x100’x100’ or a 1/4 acre. My budget is small but I want to do this right as well as cheap. I’ve read that a good electric
fence or 3d electric
fence will be my best bet. I understand some electric fence basics including the need for quality and quantity grounding rods.
Here’s where I need some help please. The area in question is about 300’ away from my off grid home and the closest source of power. I am most interested in using a 110v fence charger so I can get into the neighborhood of about 2.0 + joules on my budget and so the fence will be effective against deer and bear. I’d prefer to NOT run a strand of hot electric fence wire down the hill to the orchard but I think if push came to shove, I could certainly do that to make it work. However I have dogs and also care about the aesthetics. I’d much rather use some product designed to safely carry the current down the hill, like an insulated wire. In a perfect world I’d be able to bury that delivery wire. My thought is - since I plan on electrifying 2 strands at 400’ each for the perimeter, the charger
should have no problem delivering the power through another 300’ of delivery wire or if needed - two delivery wires, one for each fence wire. I’d prefer to go up a size in AC chargers if needed rather than to deal with another
solar panel and battery- not to mention I simply can’t afford a
solar charger effective for deer or bear! I hear of folks electrifying miles of fence so this seems doable in my mind but my internet searching has come up dry so far.
What kind of wire should I use for this “delivery wire” to bring the power from the charger to the fence? Anyone ever done anything like this?
To summarize I want to use an AC plug-in high-joule charger and have it be located about 300’ from a pair of 400’ electric fence wires set up in a 3d configuration. What’s the best way to achieve this?
