I'm glad you were able to find some information. It might be too late, but I would suggest going with the above ground wire to start with. I can't speak to aesthetics, other than the fact that people often get used to things after a little while.
Do you have any trees in that area or is it open? you could probably hang it like 10ft up, so it wouldn't effect the dogs or people at all. I just think it gives more flexibility. What happens if you want to move things around? or have a different setup? or decide you need a different gauge of wire? I would personally get it up and running for a couple years before putting in something as permanent as a 300ft underground wire. It's amazing how many things could change, and an above-ground wire is much much easier to replace or move.
