My first thought was cicadas, but I don't think they have the equipment to actually chew a hole like this. Plus even though they should be hitting us about now I haven't really heard them in my neighborhood.

I was doing some clearing work in the unkept backyard. I have bamboo invading from a neighbor's yard and in the process of cutting the newest stalks down I found three holes on one of the sticks.

I'm not interested in the bamboo taking over my yard, so I'm okay if a bamboo specific bug wants to munch on them. I'd like to make sure that it's not something I need to be concerned about.

That looks like a mouse nibbled on the stem, to me.
