Hi all, recently we witnessed our small flock hear a large predatory bird sound. most chickens ran straight under the bus, but one of our white silkies called Merry (not just because he was already in the position, but more of a response to the sound) seemed to crouch to the ground, craw first and freeze super still. Breastbone on the ground, fluffy white rump in the air. I've heard of chickens freezing, but just curious if anyone else has seen this funny chicken pose. I wonder if he really thought he couldn't be seen. Thanks all, excited to share thoughts with the permies community

Welcome to Permies.

Chickens can be funny things, I love my flock and can't say that I have observed this behavior before.

I have seen something similar sounding with hens when the rooster comes strutting around but I wouldn't hope that an eagle would tickle their feathers! Haha

I think the best move I have seen so far is my bantam hen's flying/flapping/screeching chase response to my hound as we walk the perimeter of the run. She thinks she is going to take on a 60lb Plott Hound. Some kind of small dog syndrome in her, must be.

Good heavens! What have you done! Here, try to fix it with this tiny ad:
