Nearly a century ago, British plant scientist Arthur Watkins, described as a “quiet and shy” botanist who was a pioneer in the world of plant genetics, slowly gathered wheat samples from 32 countries from both within and outside the British Empire.
All 827 varieties have now been genetically sequenced. Modern wheat only has 40% of the historical genome -- meaning there are lots of opportunities to solve problems based on this vast reservoir. Original study published in
