I've unintentionally started a new melon. I love Crenshaw melons, but the down side is they take forever to get ripe, and a lot of time they would go bad before I would pick them. I discovered today it's because I was waiting to long thinking in should slip off the stem like a cantaloupe, but Crenshaw should be picked when it feels a bit soft at the bottom end. I also enjoy cantaloupe. I keep trying to grow them, but they are never very good. They are ok, but not amazing.
Pretty much every year I grow both determined to crack the melon code. This year besides several muskmelon I also planted a Crenshaw I saved the seeds from a Crenshaw from my garden last year. I don't know why but I never crossed my mind it would be a cross.
Today I picked the first ripe melon big for a cantaloupe, a little small for a Crenshaw. It has the color of Crenshaw, but a little netting like a cantaloupe. Most important is it tastes so good. Super juicy, and so sweet. It's funny not only did everyone love it, but they all said I should make sure to save the seeds.
I'm so pleased my happy accident is a sweet success.
