I was gifted with an African Violet a few years ago, and it really put out many blooms this past winter.  I like to think it was the top dressing with my compost when I  re-potted it.  Bunches of dark blue petaled blooms that lasted for many weeks.

I would break a leaf from time to time and since I am not able to just discard the broken leafs, I rooted both.  Now the largest and first to root has bloomed!!!  Yeah I  helped make another plant, but this one is blooming pink in color.

Is this like the Spider Plant thingy?

Peace

That's interesting,  regular African violet propagated from the leaf cutting will be identical clone. That's why people can just sell leaves online from different varieties and the buyers would expect the flowers to look the same. Maybe you have a mutant. Congratulations on having a new variety for free!

Thanks, I feel a little better.  I was afraid that my whatchamacallit had gotten out of calibration and I was given off some weird and wicked green plant mutant energy.

I'll make an update if the other new plant blooms, hope the main plant still blooms blue.

I really need to get a camera to record these types of things.

Peace

Congrats on getting that African Violet to bloom again, and how cool that you were able to propagate it! It’s always a satisfying feeling to see something you’ve nurtured sprout and grow.As for the pink blooms, African Violets can sometimes produce flowers that are different from the parent plant. It’s not quite like the Spider Plant thing where all the baby plants are basically clones of the parent. African Violets can actually have some genetic variation when propagated from leaves, which might explain why your new plant is blooming in a different color. It's one of those fun surprises that can happen with African Violets. You never quite know what you’ll get, but it sounds like you’ve got a lovely mix of colors going on now!

I read about breeders achieving 5-13% mutation rate when treating the callus tissues with irradiation and/or strong mutagen. Naturally chances are much lower like 1 per one million cell divisions and only few will result in changes in blooms without affecting plant growth. Usually I propagate AV and keep one plant and it's just like the parent. I cut three leaves this summer and ended up with 15 plantlets. I am debating whether to grow them all and hopefully I will get a new color.

May, it's a little scary to think about and somewhat icky, but I did undergo 35 rounds of radiation treatment and had 3 or 4 scans where they shoot you up with some radioactive stuff to help with the images.

They told me I would only be slightly radioactive for a few hours after each scan.  Maybe I have super powers now, changing the color of plant blooms!  Yowza, I'm going to make a zillion dollars!!!

I'm still hoping that my original plant had some dna from a pink blooming long ago parent. ( I don't really believe that I had anything to do with the pink blooms)

Peace
