I'm installing a RMH in a straw bale house, how far should the stratification barrel be from a 1.25 part straw: 1 part clay : 0.8 part clay plaster mix? I would prefer not to have a heat shield. What’s the rule of thumb here? Since 1.5 inches of plaster is relatively non-combustible, I don't think it needs to be 18inches away. I will also be adding a finishing plaster, maybe 0.5inch thick of predominately sand, then clay, maybe sifted straw and maybe no straw. I haven’t decided. I would love to hear what other natural builders have learned. I wish I could ask this as a meal question to Paul Wheaton!

Update: I was fortunate to get Uncle Mud’s advice. Due to the straw being combustible, it must either be shielded or follow the 30” + gap required by code. He also referenced a tour at Dancing rabbit that he documented on YouTube. The cause of that RMH failure involved pyrolysis with straw and the impact of the heat shield is that it induces a convective flow and (I know that it also) reflects the radiation from the stratification barrel.

It sounds like sound advice to me! I already have the heat shield so I’m going to use it per the 1”spacer + 12” gap
