Resources + Problems. My projects

Hey there. I thought I'd share some of my on site problems and resources in a brainstorming effort. So far these are construction type projects as I have been primarily observing my surrounds this year. Next year I start tinkering with those. I'm more comfortable with living things anyway.

I have two area's of the house that are in desperate need of repair. The house was abandoned for about half a decade and the molds, mice, microbeasts and brambles collaborated to cause quite a bit of damage. My landlord/father is slow to warm up on new Idea's so I'd love a place to compare notes and swap ideas two heads being better than one and all. I've watched some video and done some reading on alternative construction - but most of it seems to take place in the desert not wet western washington. I have some grand Idea's which I unfortunately think may be un-realistic primarily due to budgetary/bureaucratic constraints.

I also am wanting to set up an aquaponics system for a roof garden. I have checked the pump and I can get flow almost to the apex of my roof.

That said here are some shots of resources and problems and some of my Ideas for the two.

Water was leaking in from the gutter when you can see the white scapes of Tyvek. Funny the part of the house built in the 1920's has never had a problem but everything added on in the late 90s remodel has been nothing but trouble.

Ideally I would want to pull out the dishwasher and stove (I hate them both, neither even works well for my purposes) and replace the space occupied by the dishwasher with a rocket stove. It would be awesome to both thermal syphon hot water into a tank for the sink (heating the house) and have the smoke exausted go through a maze like journey through the wall being trapped in pockets (heating the house) I would think that the oven would be basically an oven mabey with a solid grill top. I can always just make little can burners for boiling right. Something like that... Following me?

That whole wall (as seen on from inside) is likely going to have to come out. Here are some pictures directly under the clogged gutter that caused this whole mess. right at the joint between the the red wall (ripped out in photo) and ceder sided hot water heater hut (propain, yuck. as a side not I have like 3 hot water heaters to play around with)

Here also is some aquaponics geared stuff pumps and filters mostly

I also have enough resources to set up several greenhouses. I would need at least one other person around to do so though. What with glass being tricky and heavy and setting up things in general usually taking three hands

And finally here is a shot of the south facing deck and rock patio that gets considerable light. This is going to be getting a major facelift and turning into my Zone 1 greenhouse and Garden me thinks. The ornimental cherry which does block some light is almost definitely coming out as it was crushed by a hemlock two years ago and is in need of professional servicing anyway. At the very least it will be quite cut back, letting in even more light. I am considering several designs for a glass greenhouse on this deck. If you want to help please consider away!

This woodstove was the only way to heat the house for my first 13 years of life. It is still the best. But I think it could be made even better.

Hi Landon. I see strong reflections in the glass. Is it tinted?

Have you made a long term arrangement with your dad? If you will eventually own the place, that's different than if it will be passed on to 5 siblings.

I'd say the starting point for most things on this coast is to drop all trees that need to go before building anything. Number 2 would be to process it into lumber, firewood or hugelkultur materials.

A good hand drawn site plan would be helpful. One drawing could show how it sits now and another could show all of your zones etc.

EDIT--- This just hit me and I should have thought of it earlier. I do work for a house moving company that works your side of the border as well. I get all sorts of resources that are left behind. It might be possible for me to arrange for you to scrounge bricks, windows, doors... from additions that are usually cut off and left behind. I raid the landscapes of the jobs here. Are you handy with a chainsaw? Some clearing is often required when buildings are extracted. You get paid for that and the wood is your to keep or sell.

Good advise. My site plan is constantly evolving, but its getting pretty close to something I could sketch up.

Some of the glass is tinted. I figured it could be used on the sides that the sun doesn't really come in
