This is a beautifully strange documentary about folk artist Calvin Black by filmmakers Allie Light & Irving Sara.
Although the subject is compelling the film itself is really well done especially the quaint but much loved stop motion animation. When watching this film I can't help but think of David Lynch's work. The subject, sound, music, mechanical spinning imagery, stop-motion animation and the morbid way the artist gets his carving wood is very Lynch. The artist acquires his medium after a redwood telephone pole is felled in car accident.
