Electronic dog control for other species?

I visited a house yesterday where the owner had two very nice labradors . Full of energy and life . But no gates ! I asked what kept them on the land rather than run off and chase cats , postmen , police cars down the road .
He showed me his system where by each dog had a collar which gave them a small harmless electic shock when they came close to a cable buried under the ground . Has anyone tried such a system with sheep ,goats or other animals?

Yes, I tried with one of my goats. It is possible to train them. I only used it for a few days though. The system I used is from the US (I had my mother bring it over, it was once used by one of her dogs) and involved a central transmitter with a dial that sets range (out to perhaps 50m, can't remember though), so you get a circular perimeter. The problem is the current draw of the system which is designed for the transmitter to be plugged into a wall outlet. Using a 20Ah lead acid battery I got (at most) two days of use, and I think my memory is optimistic. Maybe with a solar panel it could work out.

Best would be if someone made a lower powered transmitter-- it wouldn't be a big feat-- instead of transmitting a constant signal for the collar to pick up, just make a transmission every ten seconds or so.
