connecting to this thread https://permies.com/t/278500/permaculture-writing/art/open-source-software-replace-microsoft  but starting a new thread because my question is different..

LibreOffice is working great for my needs and I'm at a point where I dug out the old canon printer/scanner not realizing that I would need to be online to install?
I have the original software cd but I can't get anywhere towards installing...the pop up says I'm not connected, etc.

The same thing happened when I tried to move pictures off my camera.

I can wait and do all at the library but thought I'd check here first in case there's a secret path to use πŸ€”

If your printer is old enough to have a CD with it, it should install without needing Internet.

One thing to keep in mind is that many printers come with the driver (the special software that lets your computer talk to a piece of hardware properly) and their own software to enhance your experience in some way. Make it easier to scan, or print, or check ink levels and all that.

All that to say the CD shouldn't care if you are connected to the Internet, but it might care if the printer is connected.

There are ways to manually install drivers, but I would need to know what version of windows to try to give instructions.

Do you have the printer connected to the computer with a USB cable? My mother has used cheap Cannon printers for about 20 years, and some use wifi which may be what it is looking for. As far as I remember, it always worked if I used a USB A to B cable. If that isn't an option then you would have to look up your model number and figure out how to connect it to a local wifi network.

yes, It's connected and I turned it on when I tried previously.v

I'm able to open the disc and see the folders and see one that says 'driver'.

See if there is an install file of some kind in the driver folder. It would probably be named something like "install" or "setup" or something along those lines.

If you don't see that, then do you know what version of Windows you have? I might be able to give instructions on how to install manually.

Ahhhh.

So your computer is not running Windows... but that particular folder has drivers for a Windows computer. So there is a mismatch. Apple computer and Microsoft drivers. Is there a different folder by any chance? Some CD's have drivers for Windows, MacOS, and linux on the same CD. Some don't.

I should have thought of that ...I'm confusing 'windows'and Windows'.

My old computer that this printer was connected to did have Windows 10.

Will look around a bit more on the disc.

Thanks for helping.

I got in too big a hurry and put the cd in without even reading the disc🫀

I wonder if that means this printer won't work with this laptop ever?

Daniel and Matt,
thanks for taking the time to help!

You might be able to get it to work... but you would need the Internet to download the Mac drivers if they exist.

Judith, if you post the model of your printer I can look up the driver that is likely to work and give you a direct download link like we did with Libre Office.

So I'll look for a driver that works with this setup:

macOS High Sierra
version 10.13.6

macbook Pro 13 inch
mid 2010

Processor
2.4GHz intel Core 2 Duo

Coming right up!

You should be able to download the driver just fine without the printer. You may need the printer during the driver installation. But the installation can happen offline.

I'm back home scanning πŸ₯³πŸ™ƒπŸ‘

The procedure is a bit different than I remember when connected to my old HP pc but I'm figuring it out and have scanned in a few things.

Thanks for the help everyone and Phil, thanks for the link!
