Luffa does poorly for me. Time to save addaptive seed! It has not matured seed for me before. I have one fruit that is finally 12 inches long. I am leaving that one to mature on the vine. There was one fruit at 6 inches long, that I harvested to experiment with eating. This is apparently not young enough! Raw, the skin is already acting like a rind. Not a pleasant chew. The inside is still soft, seeds not acting like shards of glass as they are chewed up. Basically, I'll say it is edible raw at this stage, with rind removed. Maybe next time a small one will get cooked.
These are s freshly harvested luffa from that not fully mature fruit. Are they plump enough to be viable?
They are still immature. I have the smooth skin luffa for sponges, the flesh is stringy and slightly bitter even when picked very young. For eating, I growv different kind with ridged skin. The immature fruits are sweet and tender. I got over 50 out of one plant last year, eating every day in late summer till first frost. Thete are smooth-skinned luffa varieties good for eating too, but I like these two since their seeds also look different.
