oh no, now what have I gone and done

...way too much time on my hand got me "loooking" through my garden books..oh oh..not good.

ok last year i got a lot of new berry bushes and put them in rows in my garden..good right? WRONG !!

as i was going through my garden books i realized that those berry bushes would have worked so much better as a hedge and windbreak on the perimeter of my garden with a bit of fencing behind them for support ..and to tie wires to to hold them up..

SOOOOOOOOOOO...now what do i have planned..to redig dozens and dozens of berry bushes and move them all to the perimeters of the garden and put in fencing behind them..and wires to wire them up..

it just makes sense to me..this will give me all that interior garden space for vegetables..which i really need the garden space for..and the windbreak will make those vegetables grow better i'm sure..

but why oh why didn't i put them in the right place in the first place??? good grief.

Live and learn. With one comes the other. I'm glad you shared this, as I have a few raspberry whips taking up space in my garden that I'd rather them not be there. Now I have a good reason to help substantiate my want to move them.

It happens!  Digging stuff up isn't the end of the world, just a good lesson to be learned and exercise to be had.  I think it'd be worse in the end to "just live with it." 

I planted three types of bamboo in my garden area last year, just for ease of watering, and this spring we're transplanting them to more permanent homes.  I would have liked to plant them permanently the first time, but we didn't have our irrigation system worked out well enough at that point!  Had to put them somewhere in the meantime....

Look at it like: "I have all these nice established berry plants to make a lovely garden border, and they're already near where I want them to live!" 

oh gosh.....how many times have I come back later to a plant and said "what was I thinking? it would have been so much better over there"

sometimes things just don't occur in our brains at the right time!

That's why I advocate making a map, it helps SO much with deciding where to put things permanently.  And..... we aren't planting any more perennials this year. 

We have neighbors/good friends who have been living on their land for years, and they're consistently surprised by our insistence on planning every step of the way.  It's just not how they've operated, and when we walk around their lovely gardens they're like "oh I wish we'd done such and such differently....."  I mean, I don't really agree with most of their criticisms, making it up as they go along has worked out just fine for them.  We're our own worst critic.  You can't be paralyzed from doing anything by the fear that you won't do it perfectly. 

oh i'm a huge mapmaker..planner etc..but didn't "get it" that it wasn't the best place for them..

yeah, things should have wheels in my garden i move them so much...

also i've just gotten through reading that black raspberries shouldn't be planted near other raspberries or black berries so they are going to have to be moved too..seems they are a host for diseases that don't effect them but could effect the other rasp and black berries..

iLOVE my blackraspberries..but will have to move them too..now where to put those that they won't effect my others..oh dear..well i'll figure it out by spring.
