Anyone done Goji berries in the Southeast US?

A friend of mine recently got some Goji berry plant starts and said they really took off this summer but no berries yet. Between that, and him saying they are not available anymore makes me wonder if they are invasive or if anyone else has had goji success. Ive never actually had a fresh berry and think the dried ones are nasty.

I killed two goji berry plants and I think it was because too much compost. They like to be neglected and on a lean diet,

If they are not a special cultivar, they will take longer to fruit and also need cross pollination. Birds like to eat them and they germinate easy, so would seem like they could end up invasive. I like them dried more than fresh, imagine that.
