I attended this event last night.  I wasn't going to go because I am generally far too outspoken.  Fortunately, there was a woman there that kept me well reigned in!

One of the things I attempted to express is something that takes a little more time and understanding.

There was talk of having four units there to rent.  If I were to assume that there would be four two bedroom units, then that would be a total of eight bedrooms.  Something that I think would be a bit of a challenge, but, would be something worthwhile to demonstrate, would be eight bedrooms in one unit.

Same number of people, and you could demonstrate that the overall power consumption would be much less.  Possibly by a factor of four.  One good kitchen instead of four small kitchens.  One nice living room instead of four small living rooms.  The bedrooms could even be a little bigger.  Rather than a total of four bathrooms, there could be three.

So, overall, the physical footprint is smaller.  Everybody has a larger room.  Everybody has a larger, nicer kitchen and common space.

Granted, IC living is not for everybody.  And it has it's challenges.  All I'm saying is that as long as we are wishing, I would like to wish for MUD to demonstrate a form of living that is MUCH lighter on the planet.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the neighbors, community members and MUD supporters who came to the charrette! Your input is fundamental to the success of the site re-development project!

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO SHARE YOUR OPINION!
If you missed the February 11 charrette, you can still view the designs and provide feedback! Designs on display at the ZACC or online February 12-26, 2010.
Go to www.mudproject.org for more information, or to view & comment on the design concepts online.

The current status of the MUD site re-development is as follows:

  • [li]629 house - super insulation and high-efficiency window installation on north & west walls is scheduled for Sept. 2010. [/li]
[li]Grant support has made possible a thorough review of past charrette materials, as well as collaboration with facilitator for planning final charrette, moving forward with architects, etc. Work on these aspects is expected to be completed by end of 2010.[/li]
[li]Final charrette, discussing more concrete plans (based on previous charrettes & community input), scheduled for autumn 2010.[/li]

  • If you would like to actively participate in the planning phases of the MUD site re-development, please contact MUD at 406.721.7513 or by emailing info@mudproject.org.  If you'd like to be involved, but in a less time-intensive manner, check our website for event postings r.e. future charrettes, workshops related to the 629 window/insulation project, and more.
