I made a double extraction of dehydrated reishi mushrooms and it formed a goo in the fridge overnight. It looks a bit like a vinegar mother. Goo in liquid.
I soaked the reishi bits in vodka for a month and strained the solids and used the solids in simmering water for an hour or two. I strained it again and then did the calculations for a 25% alcohol blend of the extractions. I was careful about contamination and used stainless steel, glass and cotton for the process.
I have done a chaga double extraction before and it always stays a liquid.
The goo is brown and it tends to want to stay in one piece, like egg whites do only it's a little bit thicker.
Does anyone know what the goo is and what might have caused it to form?
Since no one has ventured an answer yet, I think you have us all stumped.
I'm wondering if it is some sort of proteinaceous extract. What happens if you hit it with a digestive enzyme like papaya, kiwi, or pineapple juice? How about if you spit in it and let your saliva enzymes take a crack at it? If that succeeds in breaking the jelly-like texture of it, then we have a clue as to its make-up.
Many people have made alcohol extracts, particularly of medicinal mushrooms, because some of the healthful compounds come out most with alcohol.
