Everyone’s favorite midwinter bird count is happening this February 14–17, and for the second year in a row it’s open to anyone, anywhere in the world.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a free event now in its 17th year, and by participating you're helping give scientists their biggest, broadest single-moment snapshot of bird populations. Last year nearly 138,000 people participated, counting 33.4 million birds and 4,258 species. A newly redesigned website is full of great features like a gorgeous display for your photo submissions, how-to materials, data exploration tools, and tricky bird ID help (our blog has more on what's new). Come count with us.

LOL - it must be "crapping chicken" season - I just found a large splat on my back porch! I will document it for Cornell...

I'm going to give this a go. I don't know many birds at all. I know cornell has a good Ornithology department, I would presume they also have a good web resource with something like common birds by region? No, no don't all get up at once I'll track one down.

We have tons of LBBs (little brown birds) here. Anyone have any tips on how not to recount individuals?

Shoot them! Then you just count them out of a pile on your left to a pile on your right.
But I'm sure there are other ways.

Landon - click on the link in the original post that says "Come count with us" - that will take you to a whole page of resources. There's even an app for Bird ID if you have a smartphone.

Last week I saw too many wild turkeys on my driveway to count - maybe 50. As I was driving away I thought it would have made a good picture, too bad I didn't have a camera. 10 minutes later I remembered my phone has a camera - doh! 5 hours later they were still there but it was too dark to snap a pic.

The only other wild birds I've seen lately has been ravens feasting at the pig harvest buffet.

I will try to do this. More likely if someone bumps the thread in 7 days!
