Any advice for digging small ponds in the woods?

What do you think? I have my high point in a wooded area and want to dig some small ponds about 400 to 600 square feet in area and maybe 5 feet deep. There are tall hardwoods everywhere. I don't want to damage or kill them. Is this a bad idea?
