Greetings,
I'm in western Washington, zone 7-ish. After being homeless, underhoused for several years, I finally got into Transitional Housing. Finishing a 5 year plan in 38 months I bought 1.68 acres at the edge of the city. It's snuggled between a residential neighborhood, a trailer park, auto row, and a 90ac park. Only a mile off the freeway, but tucked into a little backwater neighborhood.  I'm not leaving our land anytime soon, my 20yo fledgling would like to settle here. I am 54 with chronic pain, COPD, and BiPolar. We are both Autistic, neurodivergent, and queer.

In 2020, my neighbor and I got together and brainstormed ways we could keep community together even when staying isolated. A cooperative garden was the result. Share the work, share the harvest. Where only a 7-11 within 2 miles, this is a food desert.  Keeping in mind permaculture and regenerative practices we've laid out the site, named Nautilus Guild; gardens, orchard guilds, meadow, coppice wood,  and a fire pit for gathering.  We have a seed share and a food share system.  This year we will put the greenhouse on a skid frame and get the roof installed, add an outdoor kitchen for preserving the harvest (maybe), add a shade structure (maybe), add beds to the front yard (maybe), and install a rain garden/gray water filter (must).

Nautilus Guild is receiving a grant from Make a Splash Tacoma to design and install rain collection, storage, and plant an overflow area.  I've planned 3 systems: a high volume storage system, a system that should pass an HOA, and an inexpensive get 'er done system.  I also intend to do a workshop on the why's and how's of rain water storage.

PEP NATURAL BUILDING Sand
Prep 10 junkpoles

harvested many poles from a coppiced maple and thinned many locusts (they are a plague!)

These poles have come in handy.  In the garden they are used for trellis and privacy fencing.  and I have grabbed them for balance support many times.  Smaller branches have been woven into wattle fences and lined with cardboard to make raised bed gardens.

Garden - Straw - Save seeds

I harvest the seed heads into a mesh bag and hang them to dry in shade in the carport. After they are dry, they are crushed to reduce volume and winnowed to reduce chaff.

1. Walking onions: harvest the topset bulbils, separate, and replant without drying.
2. Onions: leave onions to overwinter and then they will flower. Harvest when the seeds in the globe flower are nearly dry.
3.  Radish: Let the seed pods dry on the plant. Crush and winnow. Seeds from a wheelbarrow full of dry plants can be stored in a 4oz jar.
4.  Garlic: Harvest fully mature scapes to collect the seeds. Harvest the head and collect any bulbils. Split the head into cloves right before planting. Bulbils and cloves are clones, the seeds may have a variety of 'fathers' and will not be the same.
5.  Mullein: Let the seeds on the flower spike mature. Clip the spike from the plant, place in a paper or mesh bag and hang to dry.  The seeds will fall out.
6.  Common sage: Let the seeds mature then cut them into a paper or mesh bag and hang to dry.
7.  Chamomile: Collect when seeds are mature, hang the heads to dry.
8.  Yarrow:  The seeds will form in the flowers, hang the heads to dry.
9.  Arnica: The yellow flowers will fade and a puffball of seeds will appear, like dandylions.
10. Poppy: Harvest when the round pod feels dry and you can hear the tiny seeds rattle inside.
11.  Broccolini: The pods are similar to radish. Harvest when the pods are nearly dry.
12. Mint: Seeds form in the 'collars' around the stems. Hang in a bag until dry then shake the seeds out.
13. Nasturtiums:  The flowers are edible, but if you leave them alone they will go to seed. Large seeds.
14. Rubedeckia: The petals will dry. The seeds are hiding in the domed centers. Put the dry centers, very pokey, into a container with a lid, give a quick few shakes and dump out the debris.  Shake the centers again, vigorously, and this batch will be mostly seeds with very little debris.
15. Apple: The seeds are mature when they are brown. Dispatch the flesh and dig the seeds from the cores.
16.  Pear: The seeds are mature when they are brown. Dispatch the flesh and dig the seeds from the cores.
17.

Rain harvesting systems

I've designed 3 systems to gather rainwater: a DIY bargain system, a beautiful, front yard, a storebought system, and a large volume system

The bargain system will gather water from a 2-car carport with a 1% slope, torchdown roof.  A homemade rain chain directs the water into a garbage can. No leaf filter, no first flush, not even a downspout.  Overflow will be directed into a planted area along the fence that backs onto the trailer park. It really needs privacy here so it will be heavily planted with native shrubs, groundcover, and bulbs, selected for pollinator food source and 4 season interest.

The pretty 'neighborhood-approved' system will be purchased from a home improvement store.  Several off-the-shelf rain barrels will be linked and then overflow into a shallow flower bed.

The high-volume system will collect rain from a 30'x30' outbuilding, piped to a set of IBCs. It won't be 'pretty' but it will be handy. I plan to put the IBCs against the north side of the greenhouse. This will protect both from the wildest swings in temperature over the winter.  We are only occasionally below freezing and never for more than a few days. Contractor-grade garden hoses, with pipe wrap, will connect the IBCs

While this normally is near the sidewalk, I took it with me to Tacoma Gardeners Spring Seed Swap. 9 folks brought seeds to swap and share, and another 5 people just seed searching. Lots of seeds changed hands, some also brought plants to share and pots and such.

We are hosting an Earth Day celebration, April 21-23 and will have tables full of seeds, starts, and plants to share!
