This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEA curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Gardening.

Plant propagation is more than just planting seeds. Being able to root new plants from cutting is a quick and easy way to increase the number of useful perennials on a property in a very short time at no cost. For some species, this is especially helpful because you obtain an exact clone with identical traits. Even in the smallest apartment it is possible to take cuttings home and root them into a new plant. If you can do it there, you can do it anywhere

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
Take a cutting from an existing plant.
Without the use of manufactured chemicals, get the cutting to root. Willow water is acceptable.
Allow the plant to grow to prove viability.

To document and become certified for this BB provide photos or video (less than 2 minutes) showing the following:
- Show the original plant
- Show a it being cut
- Show the process of potting/rooting
- Display the growing plant with at least several new growths.

So seeing if starting a plant from a root cutting counts.
This is ginger I bought at the store, put it in Coco coir, and kept moist with water from my fish tank. Of the about 1/2 dozen potential sprouts I got 1 to take off.

I've been taking cuttings off the big mamma plant for months to use as christmas gifts. I just stick the into a house plant pot and once they root good/ the big plant needs cutting back.

Received from a swap n share last fall. So much fragrance in those soft fuzzy leaves. Some bits fell off during transportation and potting up, so I put them in my Aerogarden and they rooted! Proof of concept.

These pics are from the second batch. The main plant cascades over the edge. I took several divisions and put them in coconut coir plugs, in plain water, no additives.  LED lights 12on 12off.  It didn't take long to grow roots and new growth.  One of the divisions will go in the bathroom.

I think they should change the spelling to Sandy Eggo. This tiny ad agrees with me.
