i know this is probably english wild hare or something but is there any meat breeds that have meat that looks like that in the video it's really dark meat

The one wild rabbit I've prepared was dark just like that - funny tasting meat compared to our home raised rabbits.

thanks for getting back to me.. and yeah but id love a darker breed like that.. since most of the rabbits ive got.. it's a goal to get them in the tractor.. and fatten up on as much grass as they can eat with some adding stuff form the garden mostly carrot tops, and weeds. plus i love the way that meat looked so dark..


sometimes i look at rabbit meat and i get the feeling it's kinda like people who only eat chicken breast.. the way they have been breed. skinless, chicken breast types.. which has the least flavor of the whole thing

Ah, you are most welcome I couldn't help but say something about such rich looking meat! We raise primarily NZ rabbits and there meat is very much like a light chicken meat, which we enjoy but we also raise quail for rick, dark meat. It would be a a neat endeavor for a rabbitry to be able to offer both dark rabbit meat and light rabbit meat to discerning palates. Thank you for posting the video!

no problem..

most of the food.. even the current breeds are breed to be these flavorless meats.. or super lean.. or kinda just gross. it's like when you taste deer for the first time.. or a quailty grass feed stake. or REAL butter.. it's like things loss flavor for some reason and i look at that and im like.. i wanna breed THAT HAre lol cos it looks yummy

I know this is a really old thread, but I was looking to see if there are hare breeds that people raise for meat.

But from looking at the thread it seems like maybe there's some confusion out there about light vs dark meat...

As I understand it (from Hank Shaw, hunter, writer & chef), even if you hunt wild rabbits, whether they are dark or white meat is dependent upon the species -- and not domestic vs wild.

He says that cottontails are all white meat, and hares are all dark meat.  That's why I was wondering about raising hares... maybe there aren't domesticated hares...?  Where I live we have both jackrabbits (which are hares), and cottontails.  But we are more likely to raise rabbits for meat rather than hunting them...

My great uncle and great grandfather used to shoot rabbits and the meat was dark like that. In my experience rabbit is dark meat, and also can be a bit gamey, good in a curry pie, but these were wild rabbits. Maybe you could try and get some wild born bunnies or wild crosses ? I think it’s only the domestic meat breeds that are white meat.
Also, could it be the age of the rabbit? If you wait until it’s a big old rabbit I bet it will have more flavour! Need to be slow cooked though
